Fire clay brick is a type of refractory material that can be used in various types of fireboxes. These are normally made from a blend of clays. Depending on the desired application, the proportion of clays that are mixed can change. In general, a good fireclay has high refractoriness and low thermal absorption. It is also consistent in shape and size.
Fire clay bricks are heavy, durable, and resistant to acid slag and acid gas. They can be used in industrial furnaces, blast furnaces, and heat boilers. The material is also used in the glass industry. There are different kinds of fire boxes, including indoor/outdoor brick ovens and wood heaters. Most firebricks are manufactured from sand, kaolin, or flint clay, and a high alumina content makes them more refractory.
A high duty fire clay brick is usually made from a single clay or a mix of calcined clays. The alumina content is about 20-40%. This type of brick is often used in residential or commercial installations.
The majority of pottery kilns in the world are constructed of high duty brick. A good fire clay brick can withstand temperatures up to 2460 degrees Fahrenheit. However, the materials can be bulky, and they require special equipment.
Soapstone brick is an upgrade to a regular fire clay brick. It has a natural texture and veining. Since it can withstand extremely high temperatures without cracking, it is often used to line interiors of fireplaces. It is a good choice for wood burning fireplaces, and for use in gas fireplaces.
A typical fire clay brick is composed of alumina and silica, with some sand. These ingredients account for about 97% of the material's composition. Depending on the temperature, the alumina content can vary by up to 3%.
Clay refractory brick production includes raw material grinding and batching, extrusion molding, and drying. Various firing techniques are employed in the process. Typically, dry pans are used for the production of fireclay bricks. Dry pans are used to mix the mixture with a little water and screen out the pieces to the proper sizes.
Depending on the application, a fireclay brick should be made with a specific refractory composition. Fireclay with a high alumina content and a low iron oxide content are more refractory. For a higher alumina content, it may be beneficial to add some silica to the mix. Silica imparts an additional degree of acid resistance.
Fireclay bricks can be abrasion-resistant, and are suitable for linings of industrial furnaces. Their low porosity and excellent creep performance at high temperature make them ideal for re-heating. Additionally, they have low maintenance requirements. If used in an outdoor kiln, it is important to leave a slight gap between the inner and outer bricks. Otherwise, the inner expansion can push against the outer part.
Fire clay bricks are commonly used in residential and commercial applications. They are easy to form, but they are not as insulating as dense bricks. Due to their size, they are not suitable for some applications.
