Brown Fused Alumina

Brown fused alumina, also known as corundum, is an extremely hard material that is made by burning bauxite in an electric arc furnace. Brown fused alumina has a wide range of applications and is available in several different forms. It can be hydrated or calcined, and the degree of calcination determines its physical and chemical properties. Alumina crystals are approximately one-sixth of an inch in diameter.

These materials are stable at all temperatures. They are described by electron microscopy. The most stable phase of alumina is a-alumina, which has a trigonal lattice. The oxygen planes are stacked ABAB along the c-direction and Al ions fill two-thirds of the octahedral interstitial positions.
